Certificate Designs
Design, publish, and set default certificate templates in Configure.
What This Is For
Certificates in Configure is where you create visual certificate templates for your workspace: layout, text, images, and learner variables that fill in when someone completes content.
Published designs can be the workspace default for a content type, or picked per course, Imported Package, program, or meetup under Certificate issuance in Create.
Who This Is For
Workspace administrators who own how completion credentials look for learners and external audiences.
Before You Start
- You need access to Configure.
- Decide whether one design covers most content, or whether some courses need their own template.
- Company name, logo, and brand colour on certificates can come from Customization via variables—set those first if you want branded defaults without hard-coding them on every design.
Steps — Create and Publish a Design
- Open Configure.
- Under Customize Your Workspace, open Certificates.
- On the Designs tab, choose New design, enter a name, and open the designer.
- Build the page:
- Set Certificate name.
- Use Add element for Text, List, Image, Background, Line, Square, or Circle.
- Drag, resize, and nudge elements on the A4 canvas. Switch portrait or landscape, margins, page colour, and grid from the controls panel when nothing is selected (or when editing page settings).
- Select a text field, then open Variables to insert tokens such as
{firstName},{lastName},{contentName},{issuedAt},{expiresAt},{companyName},{logoUrl}, and{companyColour}. Pick a Date format for date variables when you add them. - Style text with fonts (including script fonts such as Noto for Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic), weight, size, colour, and alignment. Arabic text uses right-to-left layout when you choose that font family.
- Use Preview to check a sample PDF, Save to keep a draft, then Publish when the design should be available for issuance.
- Optionally Duplicate a template from the more menu, or Delete one that is not set as a workspace default. If courses still use it, the delete confirmation lists them; those courses fall back to the default design after delete.
Steps — Set Defaults by Content Type
- In Certificates, open the Default tab.
- For Course, Imported Package, Program, and Meetup, pick a published template—or leave Built-in design.
- Changes save when you select a value. Content that does not choose its own template under Certificate issuance uses these defaults.
Result
New certificates follow your published design (or the built-in design if you did not change defaults). Learners still find issued PDFs in the Certificates app. Certificates that already have a generated PDF keep that file when you republish; only certificates without a cached PDF (or after an admin cache reset) pick up the new version.
Tips
- Only published templates appear in Create for selection and on the Default tab.
- If a selected template later has an unpublished draft, courses keep issuing the last published design until you publish again.
- You cannot delete a template while it is set as a Default for a content type—clear that default first.
{expiresAt}only fills when the content has an expiry / recertification period configured.
